What Is Domain Name Registration?

Domain Name Registration is the process used on the Internet to enter the names of websites into large computer directories or databases known as the:

Top Level Domain Registries (abbreviated TLD)

It is where all website names and addresses are stored on the Internet and is a major part of its:

Domain Name System (abbreviated DNS).

The DNS can be likened to the Postal Service in the offline world. The Postal Service stores the names and addresses of all the domains or homes within its territory and is broken down into smaller units known as Post Offices.

The Domain Name System on the other hand stores the names and addresses of all the domains or websites on the Internet and it to is broken down in smaller units known as the Top Level Domain Registries

What Are The Top Level Domains?

If you have been on the Internet for some time you are already familiar with the Top Level Domains. These are the extensions that come after a website's name...

For example:

With eBizHelpWorld.com the part before the dot is known as it's domain name or website name. The part after the period is the Top Level Domain that it is registered in: .com

Each TLD has it's own registry and they are as follows:

.com (commercial) .net (network) .org (non-profit organization)

.edu (education) and .gov (government)

They are the 5 main TLD's that have been around since the early days of the Internet but newer ones have been recently added and are as follows:

.biz (businesses) .info (information) .pro (professionals) .us (United

States) .name (individuals)

Why Is Domain Registration Important

The registration process is important because it provides a way to avoid website name duplication. Can you imagine if registration was not required? Everyone would be able to use the same name. This would cause total confusion and the Internet simply would not work. Who's website would a visitor get sent to first? Imagine if the mail delivery person came to a street where all of the homes belonged to The Smith Family and there are no numerical addresses to each of the homes. Further imagine that each piece of mail is addressed to The Smith Family. How would the delivery person know which piece of mail belongs to which home and which Smith Family? They wouldn't.

So as a means to keep things running smoothly and organized, it is required that all website names be registered into one of the TLD registries. Once the domain name is registered, it is assigned a numerical address known as an IP adress. This is because computers prefer to work with numbers and we humans prefer to work with letters. Also, once a website name is registered, no one else can come along and register the same name in the same TLD which leads to the following point:

No Two Website Names Are Created Equal

Each of the TLD's mentioned above are separate and unique which is why the following two names are not considered to be the same:

you_website_name.com and your_website_name.net

Although they appear to be the same at first glance please take note of their TLD's: dot com and dot net. This is the reason that they are considered to be two different websites, one being registered in the dot com registry and the other in the dot net. So it is possible that a website name my be unavailable in one TLD but available in one of the others.

Who Is Responsible For The Internet's Domain Name System And The Top Level Domain Registries?

The oversight to maintain the DNS and TLD's lies with the:

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names And Numbers

( abbreviated... ICANN )

They make sure that everything runs smoothly when it comes to website names and addresses so that each website is unique and one of a kind! ICANN uses companies referred to as Registrars to handle the registration process for them. In the early days of the Internet there was only one registrar company available to register website names:

Network Solutions

Things have changed in recent years though. There are over a thousand registrars available to handle domain name registrations and a list of their names can be found at ICANN's website. If you would like to learn more about ICANN and the technical side of the DNS, just visit their website at:

Quick Guide To Registering Your Website's Name

Just follow the following 2 steps carefully and registering your website's name will be quick and simple!

(Step One): Give Your Website A Name

The first step in building a website business is to give it a name. The name you give it should reflect the purpose of the site as closely as possible so that your visitors know beforehand what to expect when they come to your site.

For example:

The name of this site is: eBizHelpWorld.com

The domain name reflects the purpose of the site: Help for electronic business or eBiz for short. So when visitors see the name beforehand they know exactly what to expect when they arrive. If the name of this site was something not related to eBiz Help it would be misleading to it's visitors and in considered unethical online business practice.

A mistake no one wants to make!

Tip 1: Try and select a name that is easy for people to remember but yet still reflects the purpose of your website.

It is much easier to remember a name like eBizHelpWorld.com than it is a name like eBiz_Help_World.com (pronounced eBiz underscore Help underscore World underscore dot com). The underscores are just too much for people to remember.

Tip 2: Try and include family members and friends in the name selection process. A name may sound good to you but lousy to others. It's a good way to pre-test your website's name.

(Step Two): Check Availability And Register It

When you have selected a name that reflects the purpose of your website, you then need to check to see if it is available and if so, register it. Once you register it, no one else can take it so timing is critical at this point. The last thing you want to happen is that you come up with a great name and find out that it is taken because you waited too long. Like the old saying goes...

If you snooze, you lose!

Tip 3: Don't put it off. Do it now !

Domain names get taken up at a very rapid pace so you don't want to put off registering your domain name. To check the availability of a name and register it, just enter the name in the domain search box right below and click GO!. Within seconds you will receive an answer back stating its availability and the TLD that is open if any. Remember if it is not available in one TLD it may be in one of the others.
