What Is An Affiliate Business?

A popular online marketing method used by the owners of products and services who recruit people to promote their products or services for them. In exchange for promoting their products and services and when a sale is made, the owner pays the affiliate a percentage of that sale.Commissions are usually paid out bi-monthly or once a month.

Benefits For The Affiliate Business Owner:

  1. No need to hire a full time sales force. Affiliates are not employees of the product owner's business.
  2. Increased product exposure with little to no promotional cost. Affiliates do a majority of the promoting.
  3. Time duplication. The affiliate business owner's time is duplicated by the number of affiliates promoting their products.
Benefits For The Affiliate:
  1. No need to develop a product. A very huge benefit given the high cost and risk for developing new products.
  2. No business risk. If a product doesn't do well, it is the product owner not the affiliate that absorbs the losses.
  3. Product support and customer service is taken care of by the product owner not the affiliate.
  4. Marketing and promotional material is developed by the product owner for use by the affiliate.
  5. The only task is to send visitor's to the product owner's sales page. Focus is on making money only.
  6. Work from home. An excellent benefit especially for stay at home moms.
3 Main Types of Affiliate Business Commissions:

1. One time commission: This is where a product owner pays commissions only on the initial sale of a product. This is also known as making a sale on the front end. Another type is receiving a one time commission for referring a customer to the business. Any further purchases made by the customer reverts solely to the product owner and not the affiliate. If a customer decides later to upgrade their initial product purchase, the affiliate doesn't receive a commission for the upgrade or what is also known as a sale on the back end. Promoting software products are an example of products that pay a one time commissions. If the customer decides to upgrade the software in the future the affiliate doesn't receive a commission.

2. Life time customer commissions: This is where the affiliate receives not only a commission from the initial sale a customer makes but they also get a commission on any future purchases the customer makes. An important question to ask when considering to affiliate with a product owner offering life time commissions on customers  that you bring into the business is: How are life time customers tracked ? Is it by a small piece of computer code known as a cookie or by hard coding your affiliate ID? Hard coding is a sign that the product owner is committed to protecting the affiliate because the customer can clean out their browser cookies and it won't have any negative impact on the affiliate. All future sales by the customer will still be credited to the affiliate.

    3. Residual or Recurring Commissions: This is where a product owner not only pays the affiliate for the initial sale but also a percentage of any ongoing monthly fees that are paid by the customer. Paid membership sites are a big source of producing residual or recurring commissions. As long as the customer remains a member and pays a monthly fee, the affiliate receives a commission on the recurring monthly fees. Mult-level Marketing (MLM's) businesses are another source which pay the affiliate not only a recurring commission on the business they directly bring in but also a percentage of the business that the affiliate's down line brings in. This is known as an MLM Matrix.
